Choosing a cave or hideout that a betta will actually use

Bettas need somewhere to hide and rest, and the wrong shape of hide causes more problems than no hide at all.

Why hides matter

A betta that has nowhere to retreat is a betta under constant low-level stress. A cave gives it a defensible spot and, in practice, makes it bolder in the open water.

Fish with cover are usually seen more, not less.

Openings must let a fish out

Any hole a betta can enter must be one it can leave, including with fins spread. Narrow slots and keyhole shapes are the ones that cause trouble.

This is the first thing to check on any hide, whatever it is made of.

Smooth edges for long fins

Betta fins tear easily and torn fins invite infection. Run a finger over every opening and internal surface before it goes in.

Resin caves and ceramic shells with rounded openings are the safer choices; sharp moulded rockwork is not.

Size to the fish, not the tank

A hide should be a comfortable fit, not cavernous. A betta will use a small snug cave far more readily than a large open one.

A driftwood-style hide or a small trunk is usually better used than a castle twice its size.

Position it low and to the side

Hides work best against a side or back wall with an open route to the surface. Bettas breathe air, so they must never be able to get trapped underneath.

Leave the middle of the tank clear for swimming.

Ceramic, resin and driftwood look

Ceramic is heavy, stable and easy to clean. Resin is lighter with more detail. Both are fine; the difference is aesthetic more than functional.

Real driftwood alters water chemistry, which the resin lookalikes do not — worth knowing if you like the look but not the tannins.

One good hide beats three

Filling a small tank with hides leaves no swimming room. One well-chosen cave plus some planting is the better setup.

Space is part of the environment, not wasted volume.

What it costs

Across the 22 items currently listed, prices run from $5.99 to $19.99, with the middle of the range around $9.98. That spread is worth knowing before you start comparing, because the cheapest and dearest options here are usually not the same kind of product at all.

Shipping is a flat $4.49 per order and free once the order reaches $29.00, which is set out in full on the Shipping Policy page.
